Back in 2014

It all began back in 2014, when I was expecting my first.

I had ideals, visions and dreams like many first time mums. I wanted everything to be perfect, pretty and gorgeous. You know… all sparkly and rainbows.

I read so many  books, made lists upon lists about almost everything I might need.

But… the one thing that was NEVER on my radar were ‘Cloth Nappies’

I never gave it a second thought!

Why would I? I live in a modern world, where everything is easy,  practical & disposable. I mean ‘disposable’ is the ‘norm’ these days.

As I clicked from one baby item to the next, browsing through all types of information, I landed on these!!

Lil Joey by Kangacare

They are called Lil Joeys- Cloth diapers for newborns! And that is where it all started!

The cute prints lured me into finding out more. My idea of cloth had always been just white cotton flats, folded in an origami style with a HUGE safety pin.

There’s nothing wrong with that either, as I later found out. I just didn’t think I was cut out for this method of diapering at all!

However, things have come a long way since. The Modern Cloth Nappies intrigued me and I took a leap.

The endless research began

Soon enough, I felt overwhelmed with the amount of information out there.

I was so confused!

I watched endless number of Youtube videos. Mums proudly displaying their stash, reviewing products, giving out tips, explaining the ups and downs etc… I mean there is a LOT of nappy talk out there.

The truth is, I DID enjoy it. It turned out to be a very very helpful virtual community in the absence of a real one here in Mauritius.

I was feeling more and more convinced and confident about this.

The big questions were: Where do I buy them from? How much will this cost me? Will it really be worth it? How many will I need? Is anyone selling them here (Mauritius 2014)?

I made a few bold choices…

I finally invested in 13 newborn nappies and 30 birth to potty nappies. All sourced from abroad and I haven’t looked back since!

I chose 3 different brands, 2 different styles and a few accessories and I was all set.

I diapered my eldest and…

Six years later…

I am STILL using my original stash on my 3rd baby!

I increased my stash slightly and explored different brands, discovered other styles and experimented with different materials.

It turned out to be a success story. That said, it was a risk but I’m so glad I took it.

This nappy system really works and is very reliable. It isn’t as hard as I initially thought!

It became more apparent during the lockdown periods of 2020 & 2021! We were able to diaper an infant and a toddler during those testing times without the stress of waiting for the shops to re-open or scouting for our favourite disposable brands or worry about rising prices.

Why cloth?

There are numerous compelling reasons to make the switch to cloth diapers:

Baby's Health
Best choices for your baby's health.
Money Saving
It saves you money.
Environment friendly
It is better for the environment.

Disposable diaper waste is alarmingly detrimental to our environment, akin to single-use plastic bags that cannot be recycled. Despite Mauritius sometimes feeling isolated from global concerns, we are not shielded from the consequences of pollution.

The reality is clear: as parents, we hold the power to enact positive change.

We have the capacity to enhance our world through the decisions we make today.

We can furnish our children with a cleaner and brighter future.

We can embark on this journey of change, one baby step at a time.
